Are there any big businesses or conglomerates present in our Paragon setting... like Stark Enterprises or Wayne Industries?

Yes there are. Of course. I don't have access to my books and notes this minute, but I'll give you the names and press releases when I can. A reminder that anything existing in real life also exists in "Paragons."

Are there any mills or industrial type things as I'm considering a more "normal" approach I guess to the Powerhouse archetype. Not sure really how I want to do things as I've only started reading the rule book.

Is there any fairly recent(within the last 10 years) wars or major conflicts in the world the paragon campaign is set in?

I read it and I see how I could overlap with your backstory a bit I guess. I'm still checking out the different archetypes to see what I want to do.

Archetypes are good suggestions if you aren't sure what to do, but they might be limiting if you have something specific in mind like Stephen did.
JP you could easily have worked in a factory that made computer parts or various machinery for things like agriculture or the military if you want to be a native of Unity, CA.

Gilbert: The war in Iraq is currently going on as is the Israeli conflict. We are running a near parallel universe to our own that will begin to divert assuper powers begin to proliferate.

Just curious, are we gonna treat diagonal movement as 3.5 or 4e rules? There's nothing regarding that in the Core rules of M&M that I've seen. If we treat as 4e rules, we can simply of movement speeds into squares instead of doing simple math calcs on the fly.

I haven't decided yet. I'm finally about where I want to be from a world building stance, having almost entirely read the "Paragons" campaign source book. Next I am going to be focusing on the crunch of the main handbook. Those kinds of rules we'll cover in-game as they aren't really aren't as necessary to know before we start as say learning about the Paragons universe is.

Just had an expanded thought for JP. You could be a native of Unity and work in a factory owned by Truesguard Industries inc. A minor earthquake has recently shaken the town and your boss has told you that Yulis Truesguard himself is visiting to investigate any potential damage. It seems odd that the very top of the company would be making a visit himself, especially since no damage seems to have been incurred. (Quake was small. Like 3.5 or something) However, it is not your place to question the boss, and so its been a scramble the past week to clean up the factory and make it shine for the big boss's arrival.

Thanks for the idea but I've decided to take my hero in a completely different direction. I've decided to buy the Device power and see what RP I can run with from there. I've considered building a Bleach-type character if you've ever seen that anime but I'm also going to mix in some Samurai Champloo as well. We'll see what happens.

Well, I approve of my plot hook for visiting Unity

Not a problem JP. I haven't watched Bleach, but FYI I am keeping an extremely tight leash on the number of paranormals in my campaign and an even tighter leash on the number of people aware of those that do exist i.e. almost nobody. As far as any character you create knows, there is no paranormal conspiracy and if your character has discovered powers prior to Issue #1 he is one of a kind. To be completely honest if you could write a backstory in which absolutely no one but your own self knows about your powers, I would be very appreciative. I don't like telling players "nope. Can't do that," unless it is absolutely necessary.
