Phil, I'd be interested in playing Dark Sun, if you'll have me. I'll be back up in Riverside for August, so I'll be able to make all games.

From talking to JP, Dark Sun will be taking over for Coven games. I have decided to start running Dark Sun a week after release. Apparently Senobio says he will get the DS books by next week (7/29). I doubt this and think he slipped up on the dates. I know he usually gets them 2 weeks early which means they should be in in 2 weeks, first week of August.
BUT BE PREPARED. There are still open slots, especially with the tentatives. I only have 2 for sures right now, which are JP and Stephen. Other saturday players need to apply or they'll be out!

Hey Phil. I'm interested in coming to this game. I'll be camping on the 14th, so I won't be able to make it to what looks to be the first day of the game. I'd like to get into it after that, though.

I want to push the notion of a "mini pot" to support the game with minis/tiles/books/etc. So maybe every month (or at the end of every other session since we'll be playing bi-weekly) we could all pitch in $5-$10 to buy material for the campaign. This would keep a steady supply of minis/etc coming in and won't have to put the burden of supplying everything on the DM.
If we end up doing this, in regards to minis, perhaps players can claim a mini purchased with the mini pot as their own if there happens to be one that could better fit the character they are RPing. Otherwise, all minis would go toward the group collection to make the game more enjoyable (cause it's always cool to have the right mini and not having to stare at Dire Bears all the time). Now that we have lockers, it shouldn't be too bad to keep the collective minis all in one place at the shop.

Man, I so want to play. I love the DS game world and I have a great character I've had on the backburner for a long time. Problem is I know I can't promise the same exact 2 saturdays a month. I could do one for sure and sometimes two. Those whove been playing in the MnM group have definitely grown a lot in RP. Stephen in particular. Hopefully you've been seeing that in your DnD games. As a DM I've learned a lot about encouraging RP from MnM. For one, it's easy to set up your players to fail at RP. The DnD modules for 4th edition are heinously guilty of this. As my MnM players began to realize that their asses can and will be whupped (in more ways than one) if they try to solve everything with combat they began to get more creative in their approach to problem. Furthermore, and this I admit is hard to do with 4ed rules, not having a combat map and minis helped a lot as well. If you have to envision everything in your head, it gets your mind processing your options in 3D. A flat grid is much more accurate and efficient when it comes to tracking combat, but it also encourages a type of tunnel vision with many players, especially those raised on computer RPGs where it's all role playing and puzzle solving until the fight music starts in which case the focus becomes 100% combat. Laying down the minis and drawing the maps is equivalent to queing the fight music for many players and at that point reminding them that they can "get out of combat" whenever they want becomes extremely hard to do. Combat in DnD 4ed, however, is very tied to having a grid and minis. I think the best compromise as a DM is don't draw shit until the last possible minute. Hell maybe even let the first round of combat or the surprise round go gridless to give the players the hint that there is still a chance to get creative. Also, don't be afraid to punish the players for solving everything with violence. Beat them down, kill a family member, steal their shit. Be fair, but mercilessly so. The players don't have to always win to have fun. Hell making them clean up their own messes can save you a ton of planning time trying to come up with new stuff. As long they are alive and get to keep playing, you can actually grind 'em pretty hard and they'll keep coming back for more.

Thanks Joseph, you are full of nuggets of RP wisdom. It pleases me when you share an insightful and lucid post on the boards like the one just now.
