I made this a thread as opposed to a reply elsewhere because if this takes off it will need a thread.
The power in question is Gestalt. Normally, when someone makes a Gestalt, the combined Gestalt form is the "campaign" character (think Gotenks from DBZ). Now, it would be Gotenks that is restricted by the campaign PL. The reason why someone takes the Gestalt power is to be able to "split" himself into weaker components (Trunks and Goten). The idea of the power is reversed thinking: one takes Gestalt to gain two lesser forms while the RP is to take those lesser forms and make something better - the reason is definitely due to PL constraints.
But that's besides the point, my proposal would rectify this reverse thinking. I propose that two of us (me and someone else) takes the lesser components as our "campaign" characters and then we can choose to combine mid-fight if it deemed necessary. It would make some interesting RP and mechanical decisions. Do we stay split to keep our individual turns? Do we combine to get stronger and sacrifice a turn in the initiative? Once combined, who has control? Are we a unified mind, or do we argue and bicker like a two-headed Ogre?
Gestalt is Metamorph/Duplicate in disguise. Your components (duplicates) can be radically different from you, created with the PP your Gestalt rank provides. So mechanically, this idea puts us at a disadvantage - instead of "adding" lesser members to the supergroup, we're subtracting a "campaign" appropriate member from it. But I think this idea could pose lots of fun, RP, and weird complications and challenges.
Essentially, our characters will be at half the normal PL the campaign allows us. So if it was our current setting, we'd be at PL3 while our Gestalt form would be PL6. Technically, we are still capped at PL6, but we have the points of PL3. We would each be able to build our individual component and we would have to collaborate on what our Gestalt form is able to do, hence the need for the thread.
So if any one bites at this idea, maybe we can do it in our next campaign Joseph chooses to run or when this adventure takes a tragic turn.
