I recently conceived of an idea I think you guys will like.
Traditionally when you roll a character it is assumed that you stick with that character until he/she dies or you leave the game IRL or the campaign ends. Well, barring a TPK, we are just starting a 30 level campaign that could easily take 3 real life years to complete. That's a long time to potentially play the same character.
Some players have no problem with that because they just love the character they are playing so much in all ways, they never want to stop. Others, myself included, start getting a bit antsy to try other elements of the game out and/or new character concepts. The problem then becomes a player who wants to try a new character out has to sacrifice the old one potentially leaving that character's story line unresolved. There is also the problem of overall campaign continuity as new characters didn't witness key events and clues from earlier in the story.
I've partly addressed that last bit by inviting early backup character submissions to try to introduce future PCs earlier on in the campaign, but I think there is a better way.
I think it would be cool for all of you to have a "stable" of characters that you can rotate in and out of. That way you can "take a break" from one character, but still come back to that character down the road when his/her role in the story comes into the spotlight. When it comes time for you to rotate that character in we will have worked together to explain what that character has been doing before coming back. There other PC story integration benefits as well, but I'm sure you guys will have questions, so I'll save them for later.
Furthermore, I think that eventually we should come up with some kind of "adventuring league" that would tie all the characters together and help maintain story continuity so that everybody knows somebody in the league and information and insights into campaign events can be passed on from member to member.
Now, in order to maintain the flow of the story and events I will retain control over when any of you can do a character switch. I'll call it a "jumping off window." When I tell you that you have a jumping off window opening up, that means IF you want to swap during that window of time you can. If that window closes and you chose not to swap, you'll have to wait until another window opens before you can swap. Obviously character death is the exception.
Now if we do decide to go with my "character stable" concept I'll be leaving it up to you guys to figure out how this "adventuring league" will be setup and organized. If I do it, it would be kinda like RPing your characters for you.
I've never done something like this, nor have I ever heard of any other group ever having done this, so if you see any flaws in the concept or have any questions please let me know. This isn't a DM edict and if you guys hate it that's cool too. I just had an awesome brain fart this week and thought I'd share.
