Could war have been prevented? Yes.
But characters don't see things the way readers do. I think it's a question of motivation. Some act for "honor". Some act for "power". Some make good decisions. Some bad. That's life. I think Martin is really good at taking the time to think and put himself in the character's perspective. What would Joffery do now that he finally has the crown? What would Tywin Lannister do if his son was kidnapped by another noble house (even if it is his least favorite), and then that same house sought to insult him more by executing his sworn banner-man (Gregor Clegane)? Martin does a great job in the books for invoking sympathy with all characters.
There are many well written lines in the TV show that give insight into each motivation. I loved the first scene with Tywin, when he's meeting with Jaime and skinning the stag (note house Baratheon's sigil). He gives those lines about how long after they are gone people will still remember the name Lannister.

Yeah. The inflections that the TV show provide give a lot more sight to the characters.
I mean i completely understand how each of the characters act based on personal motivation (Stark refuses to back down due to honor, etc). I was just wondering if a lot of the issue is arrogance in power and desire to hold honor.

Wasn't Tywin was preparing to march against the Eryie to free Tyrion when the shit hit the fan down in Kings Landing? Then Robb called his army together to rescue his father from the Lannisters (as he would see it) and so Tywin was provided a new objective when Tyrion freed himself and the new threat from the northern "rebels" marched south. One might argue that if Catelyn hadn't arrested Tyrion, Tywin may not have had his army so quickly assembled. Anyhow, the Lannisters seem to be power hungry and when an opportunity presents itself they take it. I don't believe Tywin was on his way to the Eryie. I thought he was using the excuse of Tyrion being captured to further start a war or gain control. Geoffery is terribly immature of course and believes he must show his power to have power. I believe that this is a recurring theme for lots of characters in power, which is a sad thing. PS. Just finished A Clash Of Kings. God it makes me so upset the way some of the characters motivations are. And how they get nowhere yet cause so much strife. Micah, let me know if you want me to put up A Storm of Swords on my dropbox.

Looks like Scott is doing series; observe the comics from the 14th and today...and, likely, the next couple.

OMFG! I haven't laughed that much in a long time. I like the part about killing off one more character...poor Hitler is going to be so disappointed. I think somebody is going to get the DVD stuffed in their Maiden's Pool. Stannis == Stalin LOL!
